Facts about Radon
Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that, according to US EPA, “forms when uranium, thorium, or radium, which are radioactive metals break down in rocks, soil, and groundwater.” You are exposed to radon primarily through breathing air when concentrated levels of radon gas enter the property through cracks and holes in the foundation. Radon occurs in all property types: commercial, residential, schools, and healthcare buildings. As a result, radon is the largest source of exposure to naturally occuring radiation and the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
The longer you are exposed to radon gas, the more dangerous it becomes so it is very important that homes and residential dwellings, office buildings, and long-term health facilities be tested since that is where most of our time indoors occurs. In our area, indoor radon concentration levels are often higher than the recommended 4.0 pCi/L and need to be mitigated. Because radon is undetectable without testing, it is highly recommended that every property be tested at least every 2 years.
